Miami Heat miss out on Kevin Durant
The NBA season concluded last night with an epic game seven that saw the Oklahoma City Thunder defeat the Indiana Pacers to claim their first ever NBA title. Hours before the confetti was released and the Larry O'Brien trophy was handed over, it was a trade that made headlines. The Houston Rockets would be acquiring Kevin Durant from the Phoenix Suns. The Miami Heat were listed as one of the teams on KD's preferred landing spots.
So why didn't the Heat land Durant you may ask? Well it's very simple, the Houston Rockets unloaded Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 pick, and five second round picks. The Rockets gave up the house for an aging superstar even though it's still Kevin Durant. Reports surfaced that Phoenix was interested in Miami's rising star Kel'el Ware but the Heat were not willing to give him up. Many Heat fans had their hopes up as many reports came out that Miami was close to a deal to acquire Durant.
The chase for Durant goes all the way back to when D-Wade departed Miami for Chicago which was the 2018 season. Wade was looking for a max contract from the organization he'd given three championships but the organization elected to ask Wade for a pay cut so they could chase Durant who eventually ended up with the Brooklyn Nets. Wade had taken pay cuts to allow the team to sign Chris Bosh and LeBron James to form the big three.
As in recent times going back earlier this season when Miami was trying to offload Jimmy Butler there became reports emerging that the Suns were open to move Durant at the deadline. Miami entered the pursuit of sending Butler to Phoenix and getting Durant in exchange. KD once again listed Miami as a team he would be interested in joining. The Suns were just asking for too much as Butler was moved to Golden State with Durant staying put in Phoenix. Miami misses out on another whale while being in dire need to improve the roster after a disappointing season.
