Inter Miami CF through to last 16
Entering the FIFA Club World Cup, Inter Miami CF had finished league play with a huge 5-1 thrashing of first place Columbus Crew. Many gave Miami very little chance to advance from the group because of team performance this season. This included first year head coach Javier Mascherano said in a press conference that his team did not have the level of the teams in the tournament but they would go out and try their best. Safe to say that through group stage matches they definitely surprised their fans and the rest of the world.
Inter Miami CF 0-0 Al Ahly
Hard Rock Stadium was filled with Egyptian fans outnumbering Miami fans as Messi was denied late to keep the match 0-0 at the final whistle. Al Ahly also had a penalty saved by Oscar Ustari with both teams sharing the points.
Inter Miami CF 2-1 FC Porto
Samu Aghehowa was awarded a penalty putting Porto 1-0 despite Miami putting pressure early. Miami continued to dominate with Telasco Segovia equalizing the match 1-1. Lionel Messi would take the lead and the victory with a free kick 2-1 with the first ever MLS team to beat a European team.
Inter Miami CF 2-2 Palmeiras
Miami took a 2-0 lead at Hard Rock Stadium with goals coming from Tadeo Allende and Luis Suarez putting them in prime position to do the impossible and win the group. Palmeiras had different plans coming back with goals from Paulinho and Mauricio making it 2-2 at the final whistle.
Inter Miami CF with the draw finished the group in second where they could've faced Botafogo in the round of 16 if they would've held onto the lead instead now they will face the European champions Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday in Atlanta.
