Kyrie Irving is traded to the Dallas Mavericks

Kyrie Irving is traded to the Dallas Mavericks

Early last week the drama revolving Kyrie Irving wanting to be traded flared up once again. During the offseason both Irving and Kevin Durant wanted out of the Brooklyn Nets. The organization took calls from potential suitors. After a month long saga, both Irving and Durant remained with the Nets.

This past week Kyrie Irving once again made it known to the Brooklyn Nets organization that he wanted out of the team. Irving's preferred destination was to reunite with LeBron James as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. James and Irving were part of the historic 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers team that overcame a 3-1 deficit in the Finals to the Golden State Warriors.

On Sunday afternoon the Brooklyn Nets completed a deal sending Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Dorian Finney-Smith, Spencer Dinwiddie, and unprotected 2029 first-round pick and second-round picks in 2027 and 2029. In exchange to Irving, the Mavericks will also receive Markieff Morris.

The Los Angeles Lakers held talks with the Brooklyn Nets on Friday and Saturday but the two teams could not reach an agreement. The Nets wanted assets that would bring some help to Kevin Durant in which the Dallas Mavericks package brought that. You can see the bad blood between the Nets organization and Irving as Nets owner Joseph Tsai did not want to give Irving what he wanted by sending him to Los Angeles. LeBron James tweeted his frustration on not landing Irving saying "maybe it's me" referring to himself as the problem.

The Miami Heat were also in talks with the Brooklyn Nets over a potential move for Irving. The Heat and Nets had discussions over the summer for both Irving and Durant. The same result occurred this week with Brooklyn asking for way too much from Miami. Pat Riley and the Heat were prepared to offer Kyle Lowry, Duncan Robinson, and Dewayne Dedmon but Brooklyn was looking for Jimmy Butler, Tyler Herro, and Bam Adebayo. Those are valuable assets to Miami at the moment and were not willing to let go of those players for Irving.

The Dallas Mavericks have struggled defensively but adding a player like Irving to pair up with Luka Doncic may overpower their defensive issues from the offensive standpoint. This move makes the Mavericks title contenders and a serious threat in the Western Conference.
