Inter Miami CF vs D.C. United
Inter Miami CF visited Audi Field this past Sunday evening in looks to inch closer to a playoff birth. The result unfortunately was smeared by something disgusting. The match was delayed nearly 10 minutes as the referee spoke to both coaches Wayne Rooney and Phil Neville after United player Taxi Fountas was accused of using a racial slur towards Miami defender Damion Lowe. Fountas was subbed off the pitch with Major League Soccer now conducting an investigation into the incident.
The opening minutes were not impressive from the Herons as they lacked energy and creativity. The home team would take advantage of that in the 22nd minute with United catching Lowe asleep which allowed Chris Durkin to find Christian Benteke lurking along at the back post for 1-0.
The 39th minute brought a response from the pink and black, Ochoa would mishandle a corner from Gonzalo Higuain which would end up loose in the box which allowed Leonardo Campana at the right spot at the right time to make it 1-1. This was Campana's first goal since returning from injury. The match would head to the dressing room at the half all tied up.
It would be the visiting Inter Miami CF who would strike first in the second half with a counter attack by Alejandro Pozuelo who would play a switch finding the feet of Campana who would make it 2-1. United would not stop there as they had a response for Miami with Fountas striking a volley beautifully taking a deflection past Callender to make it 2-2. This was a match that needed a win and when it looked like both teams would share the points it was Gonzalo Higuain to the rescue. In stoppage time it would be the Argentine scoring his 10th out of the last 12 to make it 3-2.
That would be the final score giving Miami the +3 and jumping into 7th of the Eastern Conference which is the final playoff spot with three matches left in the season.
Next up for Inter Miami CF after the international break is a road trip visiting Toronto FC.
