First ever Miami-Dade College Men's Basketball Media Day

First ever Miami-Dade College Men's Basketball Media Day

On Monday, September 12th, Miami-Dade College Athletics hosted it's first ever media day for men's basketball. This would be the first of several media days across the board for each sport. The media was treated to a 30-minute press conference followed by a team photo session and a social media session.

We were joined by first year head coach Jorge Fernandez with sophomore guard DJ Harrell and sophomore guard Speedy Carcamo. Fernandez enters the program with 34 years of coaching having been an assistant at Marshall taking them to their first Conference USA championship. He also was a recruiting coordinator at the University of Miami. Fernandez, a Miami native also coached at the high school level locally for Doral Academy. When asked if he would take interest in building relationships with local high schools he said "Absolutely, its all about relationships I don't care how hard you recruit a young man you need to build relationships with not only the players but with parents as well. Back in April we had a weekend team camp to get the community involved. We look forward to inviting players and coaches out to our games".  Recruiting is something that Coach Fernandez does well and is looking to bring attention to the MDC basketball program.

With DJ and Speedy now entering their second year in college basketball and now entering a program with a new head coach we asked what is it that they feel they can bring to the team this season. DJ said "I feel like I can bring leadership to this team and I'll bring a player making and scoring role to this team". Speedy would go on to say "It's the same for me in being a leader and just giving people the ball and open looks".

The team opens up the season in Orlando at the JUCO Jamboree tournament on October 14th. The main goal of the tournament as Coach Fernandez would state "Its just to get exposure on these guys and see where we're at before starting the regular season".

The regular season will commence on November 1st at the Kendall Campus where they will welcome Victory Rock Prep at 7:00 pm.
