United States vs Paraguay
The United States Men's National Team made a statement in its opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating Paraguay 4-1 in a commanding performance that showcased the Americans attacking firepower and depth.
Playing in front of a home crowd, the United States wasted little time taking control of the match. The breakthrough came in the seventh minute when pressure from the U.S. attack forced a Paraguay own goal, giving the Americans an early 1-0 advantage.
The U.S. continued to dictate the pace and doubled its lead in the 31st minute. Christian Pulisic found Folarin Balogun in space, and the striker calmly finished to put the hosts ahead 2-0.
Just before halftime, Balogun struck again. The forward produced a clinical finish in stoppage time to send the United States into the locker room with a commanding 3-0 lead and complete control of the match.
Paraguay attempted to mount a comeback in the second half and pulled a goal back in the 73rd minute through Mauricio. However, the Americans remained composed and continued to create chances throughout the final stages.
Any hopes of Paraguay rally were extinguished deep into stoppage time when Gio Reyna unleashed a long-range strike to cap off the evening and secure a 4-1 victory.
Balogun's two-goal performance earned him player of the match honors, while Pulisic played a key role in the attack with his creativity and leadership. Defensively, the United States remained organized and limited Paraguay's opportunities for much of the contest.
The convincing victory gives the United States three points to begin Group D play and places them in a strong position heading into their next World Cup match against Australia. More importantly, the performance demonstrated the aggressive attacking style and confidence that many believe could make the U.S. squad one of the most dangerous teams in the tournament.
For one night, at least, the United States looked every bit like a team capable of making a deep run on home soil.
