Miami Dolphins fire Chris Grier
The Miami Dolphins and GM Chris Grier have mutually agreed to part ways, the team announced on October 31, 2025. Ownership named Champ Kelly, previously senior personnel executive, as interim GM while a full-time search begins. Owner Stephen Ross stated that "change could not wait" and emphasized the need for the organization to improve not just in 2025, but into 2026 and beyond.
Miami entered the 2025 season with comparatively high expectations after previous playoff appearances, but quickly dropped to a 2-7 start. The immediate catalyst: a 28-6 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday Night Football. The Dolphins have endured the longest active playoff-win drought in the NFL having not won a postseason game since 2000. Roster construction and contract strategy: Grier acknowledged the team was going through a reset of contracts and money, citing unsustainability. Fan frustration and front-office scrutiny: Several fan forums pointed to issues of player development, drafting, and decision-making.
Chris Grier joined the Dolphins organization in 2000 and was elevated through scouting roles before becoming GM in 2016. Under his oversight: Several winning regular-seasons, playoff appearances in 2022 and 2023; nonetheless, no postseason victories. He hired multiple head coaches including Mike McDaniel and guided many roster moves. But despite those positives, the decision-makers deemed the performance and team-building process insufficient to meet championship-goals.
The organization wasted little time: Kelly takes over as interim GM effective immediately. The head coach, Mike McDaniel, is being retained for the remainder of the season-though his future beyond this year remains uncertain. The Dolphins now must embark on a GM search, evaluate roster direction, and reset expectations for both the remainder of the 2025 season and the future.
