Florida Panthers vs Washington Capitals

 Florida Panthers vs Washington Capitals

A big prime time matchup was in store in the nations capital on Tuesday night as the Florida Panthers visited the top dogs in the Eastern Conference in the Washington Capitals. This of course would happen after the Panthers receive one of the highest honors for a championship team and that is visiting the White House. The Florida Panthers met with President Trump in a ceremony that saw the team gift the President a hockey stick and a red Panthers jersey with the number 47 on it. The Capitals enter the game coming off a 5-4 loss in overtime against the Jets.

The Capitals got things started at the Capital One Arena finding the back of the net 14 minutes into the first period by way of Mangiapane. Mangiapane would earn his 11th goal of the season assisted by Sandin putting Washington up 1-0. Not so fast said the Panthers firing right back five minutes later through Sam Bennett assisted by Boqvist equalizing the game 1-1. The rest of the period stayed even and would head to the second all knotted up.

It didn't take long in the second period for the Capitals to get things going offensively and retake the lead of this game. Wilson would fire past Bobvrosky just one minute into the period to extend the Washington lead to 2-1. Once again the Cats would fight back not giving up with Barkov finding the net assisted by Verhaeghe three minutes later equalizing 2-2. Once again the period would end with both teams knotted up heading into the final period.

The third period started with once again the Capitals finding themselves on the scoresheet retaking the lead after Florida equalized. Eller gets a goal assisted by Carlson giving the Capitals the 3-2 lead. Four minutes later Dowd gets his 11th of the season doubling the Washington lead to 4-2. Matthew Tkachuk showed some signs of life for the Panthers getting a goal to make the game 4-3. Protas would put the dagger in this game getting an empty net goal doubling the Washington lead once again 5-3. The final nail in the coffin was another empty net goal from Ovechkin extending the lead to 6-3 which would be the fina score as the Capitals defeat the Panthers.

Up next for the Florida Panthers is a road game visiting the St. Louis Blues.
