Florida Panthers vs Pittsburgh Penguins
The Florida Panthers ended the month of November on a three-game winning streak defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs and twice over the Carolina Hurricanes. This would get them back on top of the Atlantic division and up to 4th in the Eastern Conference. They would start the month of December on the road visiting the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins currently sit 10th in the conference and come off a huge 6-2 victory over the Calgary Flames.
The visitors would get on the board first with Pickering putting the Penguins up 1-0 assisted by Lizotte. Pittsburgh would double its lead 10 minutes into the game with Malkin assisted by Tomasino making it 2-0. The Panthers would have a goal to cut the deficit but after review the goal would not stand leaving the lead at 2-0. They would eventually find their goal through Matthew Tkachuk assisted by Barkov making it 2-1 ending the first period.
The second period was quiet with only one goal arriving and it would be for the Penguins by way of Letang assisted by Grzelcyk to make it 3-1. As we know the Panthers are called the cardiac cats and should never be counted out of any game especially as defending champions. Florida dominated everywhere on the ice but struggled when it came to the scoreboard.
This game looked over in the third period with Pettersson extending the Pittsburgh lead to 4-1 but the Panthers had something to say. Sam Bennett would get another one back for Florida making the game 4-2 six minutes into the third. Florida would score again just two minutes with Boqvist finding the back of the net for 4-3. A power play for the Panthers helped them take advantage as Tkachuk got his second of the game to equalize 4-4.
The game would head into overtime and just a minute into the period for the Penguins it would be Rust assisted by Malkin that would end things giving the Penguins the 5-4 victory over the Panthers. This was a relief for Pittsburgh since they have struggled maintaining leads this season and have lost many through blown leads. The Penguins have won the last five home games against the Panthers that have all gone to overtime.
Next up for the Florida Panthers is a road game visiting the Philadelphia Flyers.
