Inter Miami CF vs Atlanta United

Inter Miami CF vs Atlanta United

About 70,000 would pack Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia for the hope of seeing Lionel Messi but they would be heavily disappointed. The Argentine would not travel with Miami due to fatigue and was seen ordering pizza from a local South Florida pizza shop. His team would travel to Atlanta to continue to fight for a playoff spot.

The match would start off with a bullet of a shot from Dixon Arroyo from outside the 18 that would hit the crossbar. The shot would fall to Leonardo Campana who would take a cheeky touch over Miles Robinson and then a one time volley to make it 1-0.

Atlanta United legend Josef Martinez would also receive a welcome back home to a standing ovation for all the things he's done in the past for the Atlanta side. The Venezuelan departed the black and red for Miami this season. He was a league MVP and MLS champion with Atlanta United where he played under Tata Martino as well.

A controversial call would occur in the 36th minute when a header by Tristan Muyamba didn't seem to cross the line by VAR said otherwise equalizing the match 1-1. Miami would have bad luck in the 41st minute when Kamal Miller would score an own goal to give United the 2-1 lead.

The bleeding would continue for Miami when Brooks Lennon would find the back of the net for the black and red expanding the lead to 3-1. That would end the first half in what looked like it would go Miami's way but Atlanta turned the script around.

The second half would bring a glimmering light of hope for Miami when a handball in the box was called for a penalty. Campana would step up and earn himself a brace on the evening making it a 3-2 match and it was game on from there.

Two more goals for Atlanta United from Giorgos Giakoumakis and Tyler Wolff would seal the deal for the home side defeating Miami by a final score of 5-2. Luckily for the Herons, the teams above them in the Eastern Conference lost so it keeps Miami just nine points away from a playoff spot.

Next up for Inter Miami CF is a midweek matchup welcoming Toronto FC to DRV PNK Stadium.
