LIV Golf Invitational Miami
This weekend in Miami it was professional golf that returned to the city with the Trump National Doral golf resort playing host. It was the championship round of the inaugural LIV Golf tournament that has caused controversy. The tournament has taken a number of high profile golfers away from the PGA Tournament. LIV is also backed by the government of Saudi Arabia which has also stirred the debate on this topic. The tournament hosted high profile music artists all weekend long like Snoop Dog, Nelly, and Travis Scott.
From Friday to Sunday it was a big weekend for Dustin Johnson who cashed in a big check. Johnson would earn himself a birdie after driving on a 370-yard par-4 on the 16th. He would earn the most money during this opening year of LIV racking in $35 million.
It would be Patrick Reed who would deliver his team the win with a birdie at the last hole to bring home the championship. Johnson, Reed, Gooch, and Perez would split $16 million for winning the tournament. Other teams in Miami would earn $6 million and $4 million depending on their performance and where they finished on the board.
The second season of LIV Golf will expand from eight events to 14 which means a payout of $405 million which could rise if more players join. That means there will be more and larger signing bonuses as well.
CEO Greg Norman, a legendary golf player himself has gotten the LIV Golf product off the ground and running despite much criticism. Next year will be even better and more change as LIV will attempt to play the majors and half the players victories count towards their world golf rankings.
Some of the most famous defectors from PGA to LIV are Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Cameron Smith, and Phil Mickelson.
The LIV Golf Invitational will return to the Trump National Doral in Miami, Florida next season.
