Inter Miami vs NYCFC
Inter Miami CF played in their first playoff match since the modified play-in match from the COVID altered season in 2020 where they were eliminated 3-0 to Nashville SC.
This time around it would be the defending champions NYCFC at Citi Field. Miami had a record of a win and loss against New York City during the regular season. The Herons entered this match not having a positive record on the road in the state of New York at all.
There is no other way to put it but it was ugly from the start for the visiting side. It was evident that Alejandro Pozuelo was not 100% and Gonzalo Higuaín not getting the space that he needed. The Miami back line as well played absolutely terrible.
Despite chances from both squads in the first half with Miami hitting the goal post, it would head to the half all squared up 0-0.
The second half is really where NYCFC imposed their will on Miami. Santi Rodriguez took on the entire defense before laying it off to the right side for a curler of a shot by Gabriel Pereira for 1-0. Maxi Moralez received a beautiful back heel flick from Rodriguez moments later to make it 2-0.
In the dying moments of the match, it would be another Miami defensive mistake that would give Heber the ball who would slot it home for 3-0. That would mark the end of an illustrious career for Gonzalo Higuaín and the end of the 2022 campaign for Inter Miami CF.
Next up for Inter Miami CF is an offseason where they will keep 16 players and have 3 open DP spots where they will need to find a striker on the market who will replace the production of Higuaín.
