FIU Closes Non-Conference Play With Dominant Defensive Performance Against LIU

 

 

MIAMI, Fla. — The Florida International Panthers closed out their non-conference schedule on a high note Saturday night, turning in a strong defensive performance to defeat Long Island University 20–3 at Pitbull Stadium.

FIU controlled the game from the opening quarter and never allowed the Sharks to find any consistent offensive rhythm. The Panthers scored touchdowns in both the first and second quarters before adding a field goal in each of the final two periods.

The victory moved FIU to 2–2 on the season and marked the Panthers' fourth consecutive home victory. More importantly, FIU's defense held LIU to just three points, with the Sharks' only points coming on a second-quarter field goal.

Panthers Set the Tone Early

FIU wasted little time establishing control.

The Panthers opened the scoring in the first quarter and added another touchdown in the second, taking a 14–3 advantage into halftime. While the offense did enough to keep the scoreboard moving, it was FIU's defense that consistently dictated the game.

Long Island struggled to sustain drives and finished with only three points on the night. The Sharks entered FIU territory several times, but the Panthers' defense repeatedly prevented those opportunities from turning into touchdowns.

Defense Finishes the Job

After allowing the field goal in the second quarter, FIU completely shut the door.

The Panthers held LIU scoreless throughout the second half while continuing to add points of their own. FIU kicked a field goal in the third quarter and another in the fourth to finish off the 20–3 victory.

The defensive effort was particularly important following FIU's previous two games, losses against South Florida and Florida Atlantic. FIU had allowed 19 points to USF and 16 to FAU, but the Panthers responded by limiting LIU to just three points.

Kohl Leads the Offense

Quarterback JJ Kohl helped guide the Panthers offensively, throwing for 135 yards and a touchdown in the victory.

FIU didn't need an explosive offensive performance to win the game. Instead, the Panthers complemented their offense with a defense that consistently kept LIU from generating momentum.

That balance allowed FIU to build its lead and protect it throughout the second half.

Looking Ahead to Conference Play

With the win, FIU officially wrapped up its four-game non-conference schedule with a 2–2 record.

The Panthers opened the season with a 19–9 loss at South Florida, responded with a 33–20 home victory over Buffalo, fell 16–10 at Florida Atlantic, and then returned home to defeat LIU 20–3.

Now the focus shifts to Conference USA play.

FIU's conference opener is scheduled for Oct. 7 against New Mexico State at Pitbull Stadium, beginning a stretch that will ultimately determine the Panthers' position within the conference.

For now, FIU can take confidence from a performance in which its defense completely controlled the final three quarters and its offense did enough to secure a comfortable victory.
