Columbus Stuns No. 1 Bishop Gorman in 33-28 National Statement

 

 

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Christopher Columbus High School delivered one of the biggest statements in Florida high school football Saturday afternoon, knocking off nationally ranked Bishop Gorman, 33-28, in a thrilling matchup at Brian Piccolo Memorial Stadium.

The Explorers entered the Broward County National High School Football Showcase looking to prove they belonged on the national stage. They left with a victory that could reshape the national high school football landscape.

Bishop Gorman, which entered the game ranked No. 1 nationally by MaxPreps after opening the season with wins over Somerset Academy and St. John Bosco, traveled from Las Vegas with one of the country's most talented rosters. Columbus, meanwhile, entered the matchup after a dominant 45-7 victory over Southridge.

What followed was an early offensive and defensive explosion from the Explorers.

Columbus jumped out to a 20-0 lead, immediately putting the nation's top-ranked team on its heels.

Quarterback Kai Moore connected with running back Cecil Smith on a 47-yard touchdown to open the scoring. Shortly afterward, five-star Miami commit A'mir Sears intercepted Bishop Gorman quarterback Ace Amina, setting the tone for what would become a spectacular two-way performance.

Sears quickly turned the turnover into points, hauling in a 28-yard touchdown pass from Moore to give Columbus a 14-0 advantage.

The future Miami Hurricane wasn't finished.

With less than six minutes remaining in the first half, Moore found Sears again, this time for an 11-yard touchdown that pushed the Explorers' lead to 20-0.

Bishop Gorman finally found its footing before halftime, scoring twice to cut the deficit to 23-15 at the break. The Gaels had shown throughout the season that they could score in bunches, and the comeback was officially underway.

But Columbus refused to fold.

The Explorers continued to make the plays necessary to keep Gorman at arm's length, while their defense repeatedly created problems for the Gaels' offense.

And at the center of it all was Sears.

The five-star athlete finished the afternoon with two receiving touchdowns and three interceptions, producing one of the most dominant individual performances of the high school football season.

His third interception came late in the game and helped Columbus protect its lead as Bishop Gorman desperately attempted to complete the comeback.

The Gaels continued to fight until the final whistle, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.

When the clock finally hit zero, Columbus had its signature victory:

Columbus 33, Bishop Gorman 28.

The result is more than simply a win over a highly ranked opponent. It is a national statement from a Columbus program that has consistently established itself as one of South Florida's premier football powers.

For Sears, it was a performance that further elevated his already impressive national profile. The Miami commit showed he can impact a game in virtually every phase, making plays as both a receiver and defensive back.

For Moore and the Explorers, it was proof that they can compete with—and defeat—the very best teams in the country.

Columbus entered the weekend looking to earn respect.

It left with arguably the biggest win in program history.

And with a matchup against St. Thomas Aquinas coming next, the Explorers won't have much time to celebrate.

After knocking off the No. 1 team in the country, Columbus has officially put the rest of Florida—and the nation—on notice.
