Antonelli leads and Verstappen considers retirement
The 2026 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka Circuit delivered another milestone moment in what is quickly becoming a breakout Formula 1 season for Kimi Antonelli. The 19-year old Mercedes rookie claimed victory from pole position, securing his second consecutive win and climbing into the lead of the drivers championship becoming the youngest championship leader in F1 history.
The race began with a statement from Oscar Piastri, who launched past Antonelli into turn 1 with an aggressive and perfectly timed getaway. His early lead set up a strategic battle between McLaren, Mercedes, and Ferrari as the first pit window approached.
The tempo of the race shifted dramatically when Oliver Bearman suffered a heavy crash at a high speed that triggered a safety car. The incident reshuffled strategies and compressed the field, placing added pressure on the frontrunners.
On the restart, Antonelli showed the composure of a veteran. While chaos unfolded behind him including a bold move from Lewis Hamilton to overtake George Russell for position with the young Italian immediately opened a gap and controlled the pace.
McLaren's Piastri held strong in second, while Ferrari's Charles Leclerc maintained consistent pressure to secure the final spot on the podium. Max Verstappen stayed behind Pierre Gasly in 8th making interesting comments after the race that he may consider retirement after this season.
Antonelli's victory at Suzuka pushed him to the top of the standings after three rounds, cementing his status as the breakout star of 2026. Mercedes leaves Japan with growing confidence, while McLaren and Ferrari remain firmly in the hunt.
The Japanese Grand Prix also highlighted the effects of F1's new regulations, with teams voicing concerns about closing speeds and racing safety a topic that will continue to grow as the season develops.
