F1: Verstappen wins Qatar GP as three-way title race goes to Abu Dhabi finale – as it happened | Formula One 2025 | The Guardian

The weekend began well for McLaren in Qatar with Oscar Piastri topped practice and took pole. On lap 7 a crash between Nico Hulkenberg and Pierre Gasly triggered a safety car. Most teams pitted immediately, but McLaren surprisingly kept both cars out a decision that proved costly. That left Max Verstappen free to put under the safety car then manage the rest of the race perfectly. Piastri and Norris pitted later, but by then the lead gap was too big to close. McLaren's team principal acknowledged the blunder admitting they "got it wrong".

Thanks to the win, Verstappen closes in and keeps the championship fight alive. Only 12 points now separate Verstappen from Norris, with Piastri also still in contention. The title will be decided at the season finale making the upcoming 2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix a must-watch.
