Inter Miami CF has parted ways with Phil Neville
BREAKING: Inter Miami CF has parted ways with head coach Phil Neville Thursday afternoon the day after a 4th straight defeat at the hands of the New York Red Bulls 1-0.
The Phil Neville era in Miami is officially over with lots of questions to be answered in the following days in terms of "what now?" as the team moves forward. Neville, who has a close friendship with co-owner David Beckham was brought to South Florida to rebuild the roster and put a product on the field that was competitive. Unfortunately for Neville, he spent a lot of his time dealing with injuries and trying to weed out players and change the culture from the Paul McDonough days amongst sanctions.
There was many expectations for this season from Miami fans that would ultimately turn into the fan base voicing their frustration towards the Englishman. There has been many slip ups in which Neville has survived but last night was the final straw. Miami fell 1-0 at home making them 5-10 overall and dead last in the Eastern Conference. The body language was obvious with frustration and lack of motivation to fight back into the match after conceding. Harvey Neville the son of the head coach was subbed into the match in the second half being met with jeers. At the final whistle, DRV PNK Stadium erupted into boos along with a banner that stated "NEVILLE OUT" to make the feelings clear.
To make matters worse for the club, they had promised in their agreement with the city of Fort Lauderdale when DRV PNK Stadium was built that the club would build a children's park. That park has not been built and the land is currently being used as the yellow lot for match day parking. The city is upset and will take custody of the land starting Saturday which is a home match for the club leaving them with the responsibility of figuring out where they will have the general public park their vehicles.
There is some sort of good news for the club regarding the Argentine World Cup winner Lionel Messi. The forward will not return to Paris Saint-Germain next season leaving his options open which include Inter Miami CF. Reports are that Miami are working with FC Barcelona that would see Miami purchase Messi and then loan him for 6-18 months to the Catalan club before returning to Miami. Nothing is official but definitely something to keep an eye on.
Up next for Inter Miami CF is a home match welcoming D.C. United into DRV PNK Stadium at the weekend under interim head coach Javier Morales.
