Major League Baseball Winter Meetings
The Miami Marlins fan base were very vocal with the club after the 2022 winter meetings. Fans expected for the team to spend some money to become competitive within the NL East.
The New York Mets who lost Noah Syndergaard were able to replace him with Justin Verlander while the Philadelphia Phillies who made a deep playoff run would sign Trea Turner from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Carlos Correa is a player who is still free on the market and now being scouted by the Mets. While the NL East has vastly improved, the Marlins have stayed the same.
The Marlins have enough money to sign big stars and had players like Cody Bellinger and Josh Bell on their radar but ultimately did nothing. Miami would trade Elieser Hernandez and Jeff Brigham to the Mets in exchange for outfielder Jake Magnum.
"You always want to do things as soon as you can, but it's just not always in your court. You can't always dictate the pace at which you go. And so, again, I guess what I can say is that the team that we have right now is really not going to be the team you see on Opening Day. We'll try and do things judiciously and meticulously and methodically". This statement from Marlins General Manager Kim Ng was not popular amongst the fan base.
Major Needs:
1. Bats
2. Relief Pitching
The Rule 5 Draft also occurred during the winter meetings in which the Marlins selected pitcher Enright from the Cleveland Guardians.
With a new manager in Skip Schumaker, the Marlins are going to have to make some major moves to close the gap with the rest of the NL East. They will also have to make major moves to keep a fan base that's tired of being in a rebuilding phase.
