United States vs England
The biggest match in American soccer history took place at Al Bayt Stadium in the second match of group B. The USMNT would face the three lions of England who came off a dominating 6-2 victory over Iran. Many around the world did not give the Americans any chance in this match especially that first result by England.
Starting XI:
Matt Turner
Tim Ream
Walker Zimmerman
Antonee Robinson
Sergino Dest
Yunus Musah
Tyler Adams
Christian Pulisic
Weston McKennie
Haji Wright
Timothy Weah
To start off the match within the first 20 minutes it would be England who looked like the more dangerous team and about to score. The Americans were able to flip the script pushing momentum on that right side with McKennie on the ball.
The closest chance of the match would come from Captain America himself from Hershey, Pennsylvania, Christian Pulisic who hit the crossbar midway through the first half.
The English play was very underwhelming and many confused why a player like Phil Foden was left on the bench. At times the English play just looked flat and lacking creativity as well as a team that looked afraid to take risk. The bright spot for the three lions was Harry Maguire who kept the Americans at bay as he was all over the field putting out fires.
For the U.S. the result against Wales becomes even more frustrating because of the way they played against England. For 90 minutes the Americans outplayed the English and deserved the three points but the problem was the lack of finishing. The defense stood tall from the back line down to Matt Turner but the goals are lacking.
The U.S. and England would draw 0-0 sharing the points leaving the three lions with 4 points in first of the group and with Iran defeating Wales it leaves the Americans in 3rd with two points.
Next up for the USMNT is a must win match against Iran in order to advance from the group stage.
